Change is a Verb

This entry was posted on Friday, August 3rd, 2018 at 3:38 pm The keys to making significant changes in one’s life, according to the book Change or Die by Alan Deutschman. The First Key to Change RELATE Form a new, emotional relationship with a person / community that inspires and sustains hope If you face a hopeless situation then you need the influence of seemingly “unreasonable” people to restore your hope – to make you believe that you can change and expect that you will change   The Second Key to Change REPEAT The new relationship helps you learn, practice, and master the new habits and skills that you’ll need It takes a lot of repetition over time before new patterns of behavior become automatic and seem natural – until you act the new way without even thinking about it Change does not involve just “selling”, it requires “training” Remember, CHANGE is a verb The Third Key to Change REFRAME The new relationship helps you learn new ways of thinking about your situation and your ...

I Wear A Thousand Masks (re-boot)

This entry was posted on Thursday, June 21st, 2018 at 8:45 pm I WEAR A THOUSAND MASKS (Charles C. Finn) I hope you won’t be fooled by me for I wear a mask. I wear a thousand masks, masks that I’m afraid to take off, and one of them is me. I am likely to give you the impression that I’m secure, that confidence is my name and coolness my game, that the water’s calm and I’m in command and that I need no one. But I hope you won’t believe me. My surface may be smooth…beneath I dwell in confusion, in fear, in aloneness. But I hide this. I panic at the thought of my weakness and fear of being exposed. That’s why I frantically create a mood to hide behind, a nonchalant, sophisticated façade to shield me from your understanding. But such understanding is my salvation. My only salvation. And I know it. If I don’t keep the mask in front of myself I’m afraid you’ll think less of me, that you’ll laugh, and your laugh would kill me. So I play that game, my desperate pretending game, with a faç...

Dwarfed by the moment

This entry was posted on Wednesday, June 13th, 2018 at 8:00 pm Have you ever felt like nothing is changing, that you are not getting any better and you why you can’t make anything work! What do you do that challenges you, digs deeply into your ego, forces you into a level of humility? Having a real level of humility is one of the most difficult things to develop because it means facing your authentic fears, your true insecurities, and not turning around or making excuses. Everything in you fights against it due to years of pride that have been built upon a weak foundation that might have led you to a false sense of personal ability. Most of us start the effort towards change within adulthood, after we have succumbed to bad habits and tough life lessons from our past. We can reinvent, or we can continue to be dwarfed by the moment.

“All greatness comes out of investment”

This entry was posted on Thursday, June 7th, 2018 at 5:53 pm “I have a belief that all human greatness is founded upon routine, that truly great human behavior is impossible without this central part of your life being set up and governed by routine. All greatness comes out of an investment in time and the perfection of skills that render you great. And so, show me almost any truly great person in the world who exhibits some kind of extraordinary skills, and I’ll show you a person whose life is governed largely by routine.” (John Danaher – Excerpt from The Way of the Fight by Georges St. Pierre) John Danaher, the man that this quote is attributed too, has been acknowledged by many in the martial arts community as being a master and brain of the art of jiu-jitsu. Danaher is a highly intelligent individual, who has a Master’s degree in philosophy from Columbia University, and is totally focused on evolution and improvement. The reason I talk so much about jiu-jitsu is that I have n...

Hard Work Beats Talent

This entry was posted on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018 at 1:47 pm “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” (Tim Tebow) The name Tim Tebow has been known for a while now, mostly because of his exploits on the athletic field, and most recently for his giving off of it. I am a very proud graduate of the University of Florida, and so Tim Tebow holds a special place in my heart and mind because of the great things he accomplished while at UF. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the idea of mental strength, whether it is in athletes, performers, or anyone who has achieved a high level of success. I know that there has been this deep allure because I never ever believed that I possessed mental strength. I have listened to countless interviews with people that I believed possessed almost otherworldly mental strength in hopes that one day it might rub off on me. Over the last 15 years, one of the things that I have found so eye-opening is that when I listen...
